Simple Steps to Pour a Perfect Concrete Slab

Pouring a concrete slab doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these simple steps for a level, long-lasting surface.

1. Prepare the site

Proper ground preparation is crucial before pouring concrete. This step is essential because a weak or uneven base can cause cracks, an unstable surface, and various problems over time. Neglecting this process can compromise the strength and durability of the slab.

Mark the area with stakes and string.

Excavate to the required depth: 6-8 inches for patios, 10-12 inches for concrete slab foundations.

✔   Remove grass, roots, and debris.

✔   Compact the soil to create a firm, stable base.

2. Build the formwork

✔   Use wooden planks to frame the slab.

✔  Secure them with stakes and check they’re level.

✔  Apply oil inside the form to prevent sticking.

3. Add a base and reinforcement

✔   Spread 4 inches of compacted gravel or sand for drainage and support.

✔   Place steel mesh or rebar for added strength.

4. Order and pour the concrete

✔  Order on-site mixed concrete to ensure the correct ratio of cement, sand, aggregate, and water.

✔   Pour evenly into the form, filling all corners.

5. Level and finish

✔   Level the surface using  a screed board.

✔   Smooth with a bull float and trowel as the concrete sets.

6. Keep it moist

✔   Cover with plastic or lightly mist with water for a few days.

✔   Avoid walking on it too soon.

By following these steps, you’ll achieve a level, long-lasting surface that’s built to last!
